The workshop featured sessions on supporting the increase of forest cover in Denmark, raising awareness about EU and Danish tree planting initiatives and the EU tree counter, exchanging good practices among Member States on achieving synergies in afforestation planning, discussing strategies to reverse biodiversity loss and combat climate change, and highlighting the economic and public health benefits of tree planting initiatives.

The webinar focused on presenting and discussing the key findings of the report on challenges and barriers to tree planting. The implementation of the pledge depends on grassroots initiatives in the Member States, at national, subnational, and local level. The roundtable discussion on “Forests and Climate Change” was part of the International Climate Change Congress. The event, organised by the Climate Change Agency of the Andalucian Government (Oficina de Cambio Climático, Junta de Andalucía), brought together key stakeholders and experts to explore the critical role of forests in the fight against climate change and to discuss the role of the European Union’s ambitious pledge to plant 3 billion additional trees by 2030.

The Commission will present the 3 billion trees pledge, its criteria and purpose in the context of the current state of forests in the EU and give an overview of the initiative. The new Financing Guide will be presented and discussed. In addition, the necessary steps to contribute to the EU Tree Counter, which is part of the EU pledge, will be explained. There will also be short presentations from registered organisations and advice for potential new registrants.

The Commission introduced and explained the EU guidelines on Biodiversity-Friendly Afforestation, Reforestation and Tree Planting it had recently published. Through both active planting and natural regeneration, these guidelines constitute one of the key milestones to implement the 3 billion additional trees pledge of the EU by 2030. They contain practical recommendations and references to case studies.
