How to register your planted trees and be part of the Pledge

In this section, the registration process is detailed.

Why to register?

Registering the planted trees enables their counting towards the EU pledge of 3 Billion Trees planted with a biodiversity or climate change objective. It makes you a recognised part of this environmental purpose benefiting us, our children and future generations.

The registration itself does not give the right to funding from the European Union or any of the Member States but it might be a positive element when you apply for funds. At the moment, there is no specific program to financially support the EU initiative, but there are several funds that could be used (e.g. LIFE, funds for agricultural and rural development). As part of the project, we are preparing a guide to available funding sources (local, national and EU) which will be published at the end of the year. We will keep you informed of the evolution of the guide.

Being part of the EU pledge will give you the chance to improve your communication activities and give more visibility to your activity. The Commission has published a set of communication tools with a specific corporate identity to support registered projects and highlight their participation in the Register. Projects and participants are recognized on different channels and platforms such as the  Forest Information System Europe, and the Mapmytree app.

Should you be interested to consider it, please check below or Milieu’s Questions and Answers section on our project webpage for more information on the steps and criteria to register, including the signing of the declaration of honor.

How to register the trees planted between 2020 until 2030

To be part of the Pledge it is necessary to report the trees planted which is done through a Reportnet 3.0 account, the electronic information platform of the European Environment Agency on environmental and climate data. The first step is to make an account at Reportnet 3.0

Then, in order to be added as a “key reporter”, please send an email to DG ENV ENV-3BILLIONTREES@ec.europa.eu, stating that you want to be added as a key reporter and indicating the email address used for registering and the name of your organisation.

Once your account has been approved, all you have to do is log onto Reportnet 3.0 and report your planted trees, which will be reviewed by the Agency before publication and may involve a short exchange of correspondence. A more detailed guide on reporting the trees in Reportnet 3.0 can be found in this short YouTube tutorial: How to register planted trees as part of the EU 3 Billion Trees Pledge – YouTube.

To register, you will also have to sign a declaration of honour, committing to comply with the ecological criteria of the European initiative that are described in the Commission 3 billion trees pledge – staff working document. The Undertaking is based on trust and there is no Commission verification system.
