Support to the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
Client: European Commission / DG Environment
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Marine Directive) is the first all encompassing piece of EU legislation specifically aimed at the protection of the marine environment, creating a framework for marine waters and expanding the approaches initiated by, amongst others, the Water Framework Directive, Environmental Impact Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment, Birds and Habitats Directives. The Marine Directive involves many implementation challenges, which are addressed through a Common Implementation Strategy (CIS), where the Commission, Member States and experts are collaborating to discuss and resolve various issues linked to the application of the Directive, resulting in technical guidance, reports, and other information.
The consortium led by Milieu and comprising several leading companies in the field of marine and water environment has been awarded this framework contract, which aims at supporting DG Environment in implementing the Directive. The main tasks are:
1. providing assistance and support to the Commission in the implementation of the Marine Directive and the management of the CIS process, including the collection and handling of information and support to various working groups;
2. providing support to the Commission for the preparation of technical documents and the elaboration of standards and guidelines based on consolidated knowledge documents;
3. providing support to the Commission in the development and implementation of a communication programme;
4. providing independent, impartial and punctual advice on relevant aspects related to the national actions to implement the Marine Directive.
