ICM and MSP
Service contract for support to activities related to the EU policy on integrated coastal management and maritime spatial planning
Client: DG Environment
In July 2014, the EU adopted a Directive establishing a framework which calls on maritime Member States to prepare maritime spatial planning (MSPs). The EU’s 2002 Recommendation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management defines principles for action in this area. This project supports the European Commission’s work on MSP and integrated coastal management (ICM).
Specific tasks included:
1. the preparation of fact sheets describing MS legislation, policies and action on ICM and MSP: Milieu led this work, coordinating national experts across the consortium;
2. preparation of reports on three specific areas where ICM and MSP are linked: land/sea interactions, the use of the ecosystems-based approach and methods for public participation. Milieu provided inputs on all three papers and has put particular focus on the topic of public participation, where Milieu also brought in its expertise on the maritime strategy framework directive (MSFD);
3. organisation of a workshop on public participation, where Milieu presented the study results.
