Workshop on trans fats
Client: European Parliament
Milieu Ltd supported the Directorate General for Internal Policies of the European Parliament by organising the workshop on ‘Trans Fats’. The aim of the workshop was to discuss the risks posed by trans fats in human health and to exchange views on the existing solutions to this issue. The workshop was hosted by Ms. Glenis WILLMOTT (MEP), Co-chair of the Health Working Group within the ENVI Committee.
Milieu Ltd provided logistical support to the European Parliament for the organisation of the workshop. Milieu staff identified and contacted experts with extensive experience in the area of adverse effects of diets in the cardiovascular system as well as arranged their participation. Milieu staff drafted the press releases for the workshop (both before and after the workshop) as well as the final workshop report.
The EC prepared a report that aims to assess the presence of trans fats in foods and in diets across the EU. If appropriate, the EC will accompany this report with a legislative proposal on trans fats. The workshop discussion fed into the debate on whether or not the trans fats ‘ban approach’ would be preferable to the mandatory ‘labelling approach’.
