OECD environmental performance review of Poland: chapter on waste and resources
For over 20 years, OECD has carried out reviews of the environmental performance of its member countries (as well as selected non-member countries). The reviews assess environmental trends and policies and provide recommendations for key areas of action. For OECD’s third performance review of Poland, Milieu Ltd provided support on the researching and writing of the chapter on waste and resources.
The chapter assessed overall trends in materials consumption, waste generation and waste management. Specific issues that were analysed include: Poland’s 2013 legal and institutional reforms of municipal waste management; investment in new waste management facilities and plans for financing future investment; management of mining and industrial waste as well as sewage sludge; and enforcement of waste requirements.
A Milieu expert participated in the OECD review team, which included secretariat officials as well as national government experts. Information gathering included the review of national documents, reports and statistics; discussions in review meetings with Polish officials and industry and NGO representatives; and interviews with selected national officials and experts.
