Extensive briefings on public health in the United States

The EP ENVI Committee commissioned an Extensive Briefings on Public Health Policy in the United States, in support of the Members of the EP Delegation visiting the country 15 - 18 July 2013.
The extensive briefing provided an overview of the existing public health policy in the United States. It included the following topics:
1. patterns of health care spending, health outcomes, and public health programmes;
2. system of public and private health insurance, and the recent health care reform legislation;
3. basic legislative acts;
4. legislation and regulation in various branches of government;
5. detailed description of the US Food and Drugs Administration organisation areas of competences (included the one related to Food safety) and main legislation they are responsible for implementation.
